Free Algebra Book

Algebra is a tricky subject for many kids to master.  There is a website that is giving away a free Algebra book -yes, it’s free- just for visiting their site.  You can download the book in PDF format and save it to your computer, or you can view it online.

The book is divided by chapters, and you have the option of downloading each chapter individually.  If you want to save the entire book it might take a bit of time, as there are ten chapters as well as answers for the worksections, but you can also choose and pick specific chapters to download as well.  I would recommend downloading the entire book though, it is really a great book at an unbelievable bargain- free!

Free Math Courses

Published by homesheart under Uncategorized Edit This

Finding free math courses for homeschooling is pretty important.  Math is a troublesome area for many and one where children often need much repetition and practice.  There is an excellent UK site called the Centre for Innovation in Mathematics Teaching that has tons of curriculum, resources, and resources to print.  Don’t be put off by the UK spellings (if you are in the United States); it won’t take long before you realize that there really isn’t that much of a difference.
However, one difference that you will notice is in the way the grades are organized in the UK, but don’t worry, the site explains the grades by ages so you can easily find the right year for your child.

The Red Man’s Continent

Published by homesheart under Uncategorized Edit This

The first book in the Chronicles of America series is “The Red Man’s Continent” by Ellsworth Huntington.  The book was written in 1919 and it chronicles the aboriginal tribes of America (Native Americans).  Since the book was written nearly a century ago, do not be surprised that it is not in “politically correct” terminology.  You can download the version from Project Gutenberg, however it is only in text format.  The Internet Archive has the book in a convenient, PDF format making it easier to download and read.  You can access the PDF format of The Red Man’s Continent here: The Red Man’s Continent .

American Journeys

Published by homesheart under Uncategorized Edit This

Are you looking for a way to make American History alive for your children?  If you are, then you will want to take a visit to the website, American Journeys.  American Journeys is a database of over 18,000 documents and images that record the discovery and exploration of America.  It is huge, I mean a HUGE site with tons of documents that you can download to your computer.  There is also a section devoted towards teachers, where you can find plenty of lesson plans and teacher guides to assist you with your educational journeys.  By using American Journeys in your American History classes, you can let your students read the words of the explorer’s themselves as they came, explored, and conquered new territories.

In addition, there is an 80 page teacher guide that you can download for free: American Journey Teacher Guide

The Chronicles of America is an excellent resource for homeschooling families needing teaching resources for American history.  The series consists of fifty volumes of books, written during the year 1921.  Many of the books are in the public domain (they weren’t all written by the same author) but since they are in the public domain, you can find the entire series online at Project Gutenberg.  Here is a list of the titles. ABC Upper and Lower Case Match Game

Published by homesheart under Uncategorized Edit This

This is another game that uses both upper and lower case letters of the alphabet and index cards.  If you read the previous post, you’ll see that I love to make learning games with index cards and you can find them in a number of colors.  You can cut the cards in half to make smaller flashcards/games and store them in ziplog baggies- cheap, cheap, cheap!  When it comes to homeschooling, I love cheap!

Ok, for this game, create a set of index cards (you can cut them in half if you like) only make a complete set of the alphabet in capital letters and another set of the alphabet in lower case. Since you will have a total of 52 cards, you might want to write UC (upper case) on the back of the upper case cards, and LC(lower case) on the back of the lower case cards.  I like to write the leters on the blank side of the cards (I think this is easier for the children to see).  To make the game manageable (since there are 52 cards) layout five of the upper and lower case cards in a match game style.  Have the child match both upper and lower case cards.  Add more cards as the child is ready.

The Little Red Hen

Published by homesheart under Uncategorized Edit This

Visit this site and read the classic story, “The Little Red Hen” to your child.  Make sure that your child is participating in the reading of the story and make sure that you emphasize the story’s title.  Discuss the different characters in the story and have children predict what they think will happen.  This story is a great resource for discussing issues such as cooperation with children.  Here are some more resources that you can use with The Little Red Hen.

What are the Properties?

Here is a great project that will help children determine the different types of properties that are inherent in objects.  Place a variety of different objects on a table and let children hold and examine each one.  It doesn’t matter how old your child is as long as he or she is able to speak you can perform this activity.  Ask the child to describe how the object feels, looks, etc.  While you engage the child in discussion, he or she will be developing awareness that different objects have different properties.  It doesn’t matter whether or not your child can describe the object accurately; just engage in conversation with your child, describing the different aspects of each item.

Mother Stories

Published by homesheart under Uncategorized Edit This

I’ve been working on a new blog.  It’s called Mother Stories and features the two classic books, “Mother Stories from the Old Testament” and “Mother Stories from the New Testament.”  If you’d like to read the stories to your children, you can view the blog here: Mother Stories I am working on it as much as I can, but so far, haven’t posted but 7 posts.  It can be quite hard managing blogging time with homeschooling, but it’s worth it.  The stories are wholesome, have questions so they encourage reading comprehension skills and have nice pictures as well. The kids love the stories and it is an excellent way to introduce them to the stories from the Bible.
